Lately everyone in the true crime community has been all about Ted Bundy, the 1970s serial killer (and kidnapper, rapist, oh and necrophiliac. Yes, he is burning in hell as we speak) While Bundy has always had a following due to his flair in the court room (He got married as he questioned his then girlfriend, due to some legal loophole), his two escapes (One involved a hunger strike, which allowed him to slip through his bars) and his number of victims (Over 30 and there could be more) It’s the Netflix documentry “Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes” and the upcoming movie “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” (I would have called it Vile but that’s just me) staring Zac Efron that has really pulled Bundy’s name back into the forfront of the true crime community.
Now I understand the appeal of Bundy, he looked like your everyday guy, he was charming, the walking embodiment of “A Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing” Yet, while the evil that lives among us has always been a big topic in my writing, I’ve never really been intrested in Bundy, nor have I ever found him to be scary. ( I know that his actions and crimes are evil and scary, but from a writing aspect, he never seemed like a scary person to me.) So, I decided to toss together a list of five Serial Killers that scare me way more than Ted Bundy.
Okay, we’re getting the party started with America’s first serial killer! (he’s known as the first but I’m sure there were others. Also do you think the fact that I call talking about killers a party…is why I don't get invited to any parties 😳)
Herman Webster Mudget, better known as Henry Howard Holme or H.H Holmes (or Triple H from this point on. I want to play a game 😝) was far more than a serial killer, he was a fucking wrecking ball to the lives of tons of people. Holmes was a con artist and a bigamist, in fact most of his murders were done for financial gain in the form of insurance.
Triple H took out insurance on his workers, friends, spouses and then murdered them in many different ways. I noticed I said workers and didn't bring up Triple H’s Occupation, he owned a hotel and pharmacy. A lot of Triple H’s murders or actions were highly fictionalized but he broke up marriages, murdered families and caused a lot of women to go missing. It was the murder of his friend and partner in crime, Benjamin Pitezel, that finally tripped up Holmes.
It was an insurance plot cooked up by Holmes where Pitezel would fake his death so his wife could get a $10k payout, but instead of using a corpse as Pitezel’s body, Triple H killed his friend and then convinced his wife to let him take 3 of her children (I’m guessing he told her he was taking them to her husband) when Pitezel’s wife and oldest daughter started questioning Holmes about Pitezel and the now three missing children, he forced the women into a trunk, drilled a hole in it and pumped it full of gas, asphyxiating the women.
In all Triple, H killed 9 people, confessed to 27 murders and became an American tall tale of the man with a murder hotel that killed over 200 people.
Martin Schulze and Leonardo Dicaprio were rumored to be in the process of making a movie about Homles but no word as of yet if this monster will make it to the big screen like Bundy.
"I was born with the devil in me. I could not help the fact that I was a murderer, no more than the poet can help the inspiration to sing — I was born with the 'Evil One' standing as my sponsor beside the bed where I was ushered into the world, and he has been with me since." -H.H Holmes
🤦♂️🏾 This guy is sick, twisted and the center of Colombian outrage due to a flawed legal system. Luis Alfredo Garavito Cubillos, better known as La Bestia (The Beast), is a Colombian rapist and serial killer. In 1999 he confessed to the rape and murder of 138 children, aging from 6-16 years old. Luis’ M.O was to prey on homeless, orphaned or poor children, gaining their trust by offering them candy, money or a job. Luis would pretend to be a number of different people to put the boys worries at ease, such as a priest, a farmer, another homeless person, etc…anyone that would fit the bill for the story he was telling.
After that he would walk the kids around for however long it took for them to become visibly tired. Then he would attack them, tie them up and…what he did to those kids is so dark and terrible that I don’t even want to write about it here. His victims where tortured for days on end. The remains found from the maps drawn by Luis and given to the police have caused Police to believe his body count could be well into the 300s.
While he was sentenced 1,853 years and 9 days, Columbian law limits imprisonment to 40 years and since Luis worked with the police and gave them the location of the bodies, his time got reduced to 22 years. Also, Luis is a model inmate and is up for early release in 2021, a fact that has the Columbian people outraged. The government has put in place a sentence for crimes against children to be 60 years due to the outcry but the murders and sentencing just shined a light on Columbia’s legal system which was not prepared for the actions of a serial killer.
Robert Ben Rhoades
I hate hitchhiker killings, because I feel like it causes people to stop trusting one another and stop helping each other. I know, that was random, back to the crazies. Robert Ben Rhoades, also known as The Truck Stop Killer, is the human embodiment of trash! Rhoades was a long haul trucker all across North America, while most truckers want to make their money and get home to their families, Rhoades enjoyed the weeks on the road because it allowed him to find his victims.
Rhoades would pick up hitchhikers and truck stop sex workers, then imprison them in his trucks sleeping cabin, that he turned into a torture cabin. The women would be handcuffed, gagged and raped, sometimes for weeks on end. When Rhoades was done, torturing his victims he would strangle them and dump their bodies in another state, making it hard for police to see a pattern.
Rhoades was arrested after a police officer saw his truck parked on the side of the road with its hazard lights on. Upon investigating the truck, the officer found a woman, tied up and screaming for help. They found all of Rhoades tools of torture, fish hooks he used to pierce his victims with, cattle prods and other things not meant to be used on a human being. The FBI got involved and figured out that Rhoades was responsible for countless murders across America for the past 15 years. All this was based on his trucking routes matching up with missing persons and bodies being discovered. Rhoades is believed to have over 50 victims. The monster would take photos of his victims, one infamous photo is that of Regina Kay Walters, believed to be taken right before her murder.
Now here is one that checks a few boxes for me. There is nothing I love more than finding stories about the dark side of professional wrestling, from Moola being a pimp to Brody being stabbed to death but this one takes the cake.
Juana Barraza also known as La Mataviejitas ("The Old Lady Killer") was a Luchador wrestler in Mexico before she retired her mask and turned to a new career in murdering the elderly. Barraza’s haterd for older women came from her resentment for her alcoholic mother who traded her to a man for three beers when Barraza was a child. That man abused and raped Barraza causing her to become pregnant.
The anger and strength that was displayed upon these elderly women caused the police to suspect a male as their serial killer at first. Even with witnesses stating they saw the killer in a dress or that they saw a muscular woman leave a victims apartment, the police still searched for male suspects. They began questioning transvestist prostitutes in the Mexico City area.
On January 25, 2006 a suspect was arrested fleeing the home of the killer’s latest victim and to everyone’s surprise it was a woman, Juana Barraza’s finger prints were taken and matched to ten of the murdered victims. They found out Barraza was posing as a government health care officer or a rep for the hospital to get access into the victims homes.
In all Barraza got 759 years for the murder of 40 women but it’s believed her body count is as high as 48.
Warning: Don’t google Barraza, for some reason there are a lot of crime scene images showing the bodies of her victims.
